Claudia Perales-Garcia, teacher at Park Middle School standing in the hallway in front of the mural.

Every week, we shine a spotlight on one Lincoln Public Schools staff member! This week, meet Claudia Perales-Garcia, teacher at Park Middle School.

“Ms. Perales has always made class fun and entertaining. She would do activities that help us make more connections with our classmates and her. She is also a very great AVID teacher too. I have improved my public speaking skills and note taking skills greatly. She also has very positive relationships with students and will help them out when they are having a hard time personally or academically.” - Cheng, LPS student.

In a few sentences, briefly describe your role at LPS.
I'm the seventh and eighth grade AVID teacher at Park Middle School.

How long have you worked for LPS?
Just finished my eighth year of teaching in LPS!

What inspired you to become part of the education field at LPS?
I had exceptional cooperating teachers during my student teaching experience. Becky Montonya, Nora Lenz and Doreen Ainslie demonstrated what makes LPS such a great welcoming and supportive district. They made me feel valued and encouraged me as I began my career in education.

What has been your favorite part of working here? What aspect of your job do you find most rewarding?
Park has some of the most incredible students, though I may be a little biased. I enjoy empowering students through our AVID community and helping them recognize their own potential. It is so rewarding to be able to provide opportunities such as career fairs and college visits, then witness each student's growth as they become more confident in all they do. One of my favorite parts of the job is continuing to support students beyond middle school by attending their high school events and celebrating their achievements as they progress through LPS.

In one word, what makes you proud to work for LPS?
Students.

Did you attend LPS as a student? If so, which school(s)? If not, where are you from?
I’m from Lexington, Neb.

What path did you take after completing your formal education?
I graduated from the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

What do you enjoy most about the Lincoln community?
Lincoln is incredibly diverse. There are so many traditions, perspectives, and communities being reflected from different parts of the world. It reminds us that we all belong.

What is your favorite childhood book or a book that has influenced your life positively?
“Tortillitas para Mamá and Other Nursery Rhymes.” This bilingual book helped me feel grounded as it represented both sides of who I am. It also reminded me of the power of being able to speak and read in multiple languages.

Share a shout out to a former teacher who impacted your life.
All of the teachers I had at Lexington Public Schools shaped who I am as an educator. A few key ones throughout my life were my kindergarten teacher Mrs. Vermass, my fifth grade teacher Mrs. Hicken, Mrs. Bartling in middle school and Mrs. Brandberry, Mr. Spotanski and Mr. Zarate in high school. Each one taught me something different. However, what they all had in common was their ability to set high expectations while taking the time to truly get to know me and my family beyond the classroom.
